Stardawg from Fun Uncle

Stardawg from Fun Uncle via Hollyweed on 2/21/19. THC Tested out at 24.14%. Purchased for $30 plus tax. I have seen Fun Uncle around as of late and it’s being pushed as a bargain brand so of course I was interested. I was on the hunt for a sativa and while they didn’t have any in stock at Hollyweed, I managed to grab this Stardawg and figured it would probably work as a substitute until I got something a bit more racy. The flower itself looks decent but definitely comes off as outdoor. It’s trimmed well but I’m not sure about the cure, the scent itself is veggie and musty. Sometimes you can open a bag and let it air out and you’ll start to get a real feel for the scent, but in this case it stayed veggie and musty with no other smells I can pick up on.

The buds are in fairly good shape for being in a bag but there isn’t a whole lot of triches going on. The effect is fairly uplifting and energetic at first, but after about an hour or so you’re going to feel it start to bring you down, you can smoke more but you’ll continue to feel tired until you’re ready for bed or a nap. I’d say this is some decent outdoor but without a good scent and triche coverage it’s hard to justify the ticket, especially when it’s similar to the ticket on an L.A. Made 8th. I will definitely be on the look out for more Fun Uncle Flower, especially if I can find it for more of an Old Pal, but I can’t say I’ll be on the hunt for more Stardawg any time soon.

Candyland from Cru Cannabis

Candyland from Cru Cannabis via MMD Hollywood on 1/24/19. THC Tested out at 25.05%. Purchased for $40 plus tax. This is my first experience with CRU and I have to say this batch does not disappoint. I was sold on the look of this Candyland instantly and as soon as I saw it I knew I wasn’t leaving the shop without it. The trich coverage was hella impressive at first glance, no need for a flashlight here, this lady looks good no matter the lighting. Light and dark greens make up a majority of the nugs surface coloring with hints of purple here and there.

It’s actually after grinding that purps really put themselves on display. The nug itself is dense but not rock hard, it has the consistency of a soft baked sugar cookie but doesn’t crumble to the touch. I like the feel of breaking this batch up by hand, it really gives you that finger hash feeling and lets you know you’re working with some high quality herb. The smell is sweet overall , definitely living up to its namesake, I’m also detecting notes of light citrus specifically and a general fruity scented background. The effect is great for a sativa, it doesn’t hold you back or keep you from focusing on a task at hand. I had something I was dreading doing for a majority of the day, decided to smoke a bowl of Candyland and before I knew it, I was kicking ass and nearly done with that chore. I really have to hand it to this strain motivation wise as I was happy to procrastinate on that project but with Candyland on my side, I whipped it out and got it done. For my first foray into CRU territory was definitely successful, great job guys, really looking forward to trying out other strains to see if they hold up.

MAC #capscut from L.A Made

MAC #capscut from L.A Made via Peace of Green on 1/21/19. Unsure of THC% as it’s not on the packaging. Picked up for a bargain price of $30 plus tax. I was extremely excited to find that I lived only a few miles from the home of the original MAC so when I saw it pop up on POG’s menu for a bargain I jumped down there asap. While the nugs in the giant metal bowl were a sort of bitsy, you could clearly see why this strain is so hyped. Even the small buds come armed with massive amounts of triches that cover a landscape of every color that weed can possibly be with the occasional golden hair popping up at random. I’m glad they photograph well because i’d have a hard time describing how abundant and pristine the triches look. You can see it yourself.

Opposed to something like Purple Punch, this strain has a curb appeal and the headchange to match. The scent is hard to describe which is why I didn’t touch on it in my first impressions video. Spice seems to lead the charge with hints of gas and a slight minty sweetness. Even now after spending a few weeks with it I have a hard time with putting out a description I feel satisfied with. The headchange is strong and near immediate, it’s really incredible and is the essence of a “one hitter quitter”. I can’t emphasize this enough, it really is that intense. The first time I sat down and pow wowwed on some MAC with a friend, I smoked a couple bong rips back to back and in 10 minutes got that “Oh shit am I getting too high?” feeling that usually only accompanies edibles. No hype, no bullshit, there is a reason this “strand” is getting a lot of attention right now. It will leave you stuck in your thoughts, easily distracted, and fighting to focus but you’ll feel great the whole time. If you have an agenda to keep, MAC may not be the best choice, but on an aimless hike through the woods this is exactly the strain I’d want to take. In fact, I’d essentially be stoked to smoke this strain any time I don’t have anything going on that requires my attention 100%. I love that these genetics are getting out there. I’m really looking forward to trying out what others have done with MAC itself as well as the future crosses they will bring. Thanks Capulator, amazing stuff.

Blackjack from Triple Seven DTLA

BlackJack from Triple Seven DTLA via  Eaze on 11/21. Purchased for $49. THC Tested out at 15%. I’m not sure where it came from but I have seen a lot of Blackjack over the past year, from 80$ ounces at seshes to one of my last Old Pal reviews to this, a premium brand at a premium price. First impression, I like the jar, seems like the same type of jar Korova uses. On opening that classic Jack smell comes pouring out, like a sweet and spicy potpourri, it’ll make your mouth water if you’re a jack fan. The nugs are a beautiful light green with very occasional orange hairs with a nice even coating of triches. The bud has a similar density to a piece of popcorn and seems to be cured very well. You can break it up easily by hand but the herb itself doesn’t turn to dust in the process. The smoke is smooth and doesn’t expand and the head change is good but it doesn’t really stand out in comparison to the other Blackjack I have smoked. While this is definitely the most visually alluring Blackjack I have ever seen, I can’t say it justifies the price. At a pretax price of 49$ you are paying the same ticket of Lumpys or Alien Labs and I can’t say this is quiet at that level yet. I can see this sitting at the $40 mark, but any more than that I’d hesitate as the options you have at $50 an eighth are incredible and this doesn’t quiet make the grade, although it’s close. I’m definitely going to see what else Triple Seven DTLA has on offer as it’s clear they know how to grow fantastic herb, they just have to work on dialing back that price just a bit.
