LA Kush Cake from Indoor Organic Gardens

LA Kush Cake from Indoor Organic Gardens via Gulf Coast Haze Collective on 10/31/19. THC tested out to 20.27%. Acquired for a donation of $50. Another beautiful batch of flower from the current collection of IOG making the rounds. These semi dense buds are a deep rich purple with lime green accents contrasted against fireplace orange pistils encrusted in stunning triches that give off a diamond-like shine.

The nose out of the jar is a mild sweet mustIness with a minor vanilla cake background. When breaking the nug that sugar sweetness stays present but I also pick up on notes of mint and rubber. When breaking it down by hand you get a slight stick on the fingers and the mint really steps to the foreground while holding equal presence with that sugar sweetness. The inhale is smooth as expected, and I get a little sense of that mint on the way in, while it shifts on the exhale to a muted mint with a gassy background and a touch of a sweet aftertaste. The headchange comes on quick and feels like getting smacked in the face with a hunk of pizza dough. My eyes are hazy and tired and I feel just a slight touch of weight on the forehead down into the bridge of my nose. I used it to take the edge off a cup of afternoon coffee, which was a great balance of energy and euphoria at first, but it quickly went from taking the edge off to taking the whole cup. As time passes this one definitely settles in and if you don’t keep your body and mind active you’re going to find yourself heavy eyed and bound for a weed nap, if not a good nights rest, depending on the time of day. It’s really a fantastic herb for the end of the day if you’re looking to slowly melt into the couch and then slowly fade out of existence. I continue to be impressed with the quality that IOG produces. I know they are tireless perfectionists who are constantly striving to improve their output and never remain complacent with the results. Zkittlez from Cali-X

Zkittlez from Cali-X via Gulf Coast Haze Collective on 10/31/19. No THC levels indicated on the bag. Acquired for a $50 donation. The few times I’ve had Zkittlez in the past they haven’t been that great so it’s a strain I’ve typically shied away from, but when I saw Gulfcoast had some on deck, I knew it would be quality and I decided to jump in. The surface of the bud shifts from dark to light green and even dips into near light yellow at times, similar to the coloring on the outside of a watermelon, but with dark amber pistils and a light dusting of triches.

The nose out of the bag was initially muted but after a couple days of opening it up and letting it breath I picked up on a sweet fruity smell that mostly leaned toward a musty orange. When busting the nug open the smell was the same but actually got a little more muted which was unexpected. When breaking it down by hand it left a slight slight stick on the fingers and it revealed a sweet lemon lime candy type zing which filled me in on how it came about its name. The inhale was smooth and I picked up on notes of orange candy. On the exhale it morphed a little to a more earthy musty orange flavor. As for the headchange, it has a nice smack up top and comes with a little bit of feel good energy initially, while following up with that pressure from the back of your sinuses up into your forehead. I found it to be a nice middle of the road hybrid. I was able to get things done around the house, play games and watch TV all while feeling a good slap without it weighing me down too much or knocking me out for the count. I have to say I enjoyed this batch of Zkittlez more than any other I’ve tried so far, it was a good experience for the ticket, and it’s made me less hesitant to check out this strain from other skilled growers going forward. This was a also great introduction to the quality that Cali Xotics is capable of putting out and I’m excited to get my hands on more of their product as it comes down the line. Excellent work CaliX and props to Gulfcoast for always carrying that supreme heat!

Grape Jelly from Elyon

Grape Jelly from Elyon via Puffy on 11/15/19. THC tested out to 22.84%. Retails for $39.50 plus tax, I got 30% off due to a special that day. I tacked this on to my Puffy order so that I could qualify for free delivery as that alone costs $14. I’d heard mixed things about Elyon so I decided to give them a shot and see what they were about first hand. When I got the delivery I was stoked because I saw the harvest date was on 9/20/19 so I was in for a fresh flower experience. Unfortunately that’s where my excitement ended. I opened the jar and the nose was straight musty in an unappealing way, it smelled sort of like old dirty plants, kind of like how a bag of pine needles smells with less of a piney edge. When I dumped out the nugs they actually looked pretty good and turned out to be really photogenic.

What the photos can’t convey is how absolutely bone dry these buds were. They are dense and brittle and hard to break down by finger. When I broke open the nug I caught the faint whiff of sweet and rubber but it was so muted it was hard to tell. When I finally got it ground down it the only scent I detected was musty and plant like. The inhale was kind of harsh and had a resin like taste. I decided to roll a joint, and while I’m not the type to typically comment on the color of ash, the ash was dark as night and the joint put up a fight to stay lit. I was able to get about half way through it before I gave up the fight myself. It did have a decent smack to it and was fairly heavy but smoking it is too much of a chore to cop a mild buzz so I’d rather just put the jar away. Sorry Elyon, it was a great start with the harvest date and the herb does look decent but something went awry here and it’s simply not an enjoyable smoking experience. This one is a definite pass.

Willie’s Kushmints from Indoor Organic Gardens

Willie’s Kushmints from Indoor Organic Gardens via Gulf Coast Haze Collective on 10/31/19. THC tested out to 25.24%. Acquired for a donation of $50 total. When I saw IOG was making new drops around So Cal I was determined to get my hands on some. These Willie’s Kushmints are absolutely stunning. The buds are a beautiful combination of light green and deep purple with pale orange hairs winding their way through the crags of a trich blasted nugscape.

The nose out of the jar is fruity with a sweet cake. In my first impressions video I said it smells like those delicious Bon Appetite Berry Cheese Danishes that you’d get at a gas station and I stand by that description. On breaking the nug I pick up the same scent however it gets louder and is accompanied by a hint of mint. When breaking it up by hand you get a slight stick on the fingers and the mint blasts its way to the foreground battling for dominance against that sweet vanilla cake scent. The inhale is smooth as expected and I pick up on a taste that reminds me of toasted marshmallow while on the exhale I get mint with a sort of earthy copper aftertaste. The headchange is very interesting as it comes on quick but grips your brain gently at first and then starts to slowly squeeze. As I was walking around the house I felt as if everything just slowed down. After a single bowl any sense of urgency I had in the minutes before completely disappeared. I found myself on autopilot with the occasional hiccup, like opening the wrong cupboard and taking what felt like 2 or 3 full seconds to understand that, as I moved through the chores on my list. Even while putting together this review I find myself writing words out of order or writing the wrong words all together. My thought processes all twisted up and slightly suspended like the noodles in a plate of spaghetti. Over time, it’ll sap of you of your energy completely and you’ll want to find place to sit down for a while, hopefully in front of TV with drink and snack in hand as I feel the munchies are strong with this one. Overall I’d say WKM doesn’t smack so much as it does smashes you slowly into the ground until you’re ready for a nap. Another fantastic batch from IOG at a really reasonable ticket when considering it’s of the highest caliber. Great work to the awesome folks at IOG once again, I definitely didn’t expect anything less, but you guys really knocked out of the park.

.38 Special from Hollowtips

.38 Special from Hollowtips on 10/27/19. Shout out to @dadailydabba and @thepristinegreen (on instagram) for the line on this one. COA supplied by Hollowtips shows THC tested out to 30.8%. They are actually not quite in shops at the time of this writing so I’ve been asked to refrain from speaking on pricing. After seeing all the activity surrounding Hollowtips online as of late I was extremely intrigued as to their flower offering and I was undoubtedly stoked to get my hands on some of this .38 Special. The buds in this batch are absolutely beautiful. They are large semi-dense light green nugs with splashes of deep rich purple accompanied by occasional light orange and nearly white pistils all thoroughly encrusted in a thick layer of radiant triches.

The nose out of the jar is a pleasing mix of fuel combined with sweet vanilla cake. On the nug break I catch the same scent but there’s a pine element introduced with maybe just a hint of lemon. Breaking it down by hand it leaves a nice stick on the fingers and the fuel seems to give way to that pine scent while the sweet cake smell remains equally present giving you an extremely pleasant nostril zinging experience. The inhale is smooth and I catch a faint bit of mint on the way in while getting a nice combo of fuel and sugar sweet on the exhale. The headchange comes on quick and hits hard. Within 30 seconds of taking the rip I felt oxymoronic in the sense that the weight hit my eyes while at the same time my head felt like it started to float. The effect feels heavy and intense yet you’re able to operate fully and focus if need be as long as that floaty headed feeling isn’t too distracting for you. What I think I like most about 38 special, and what makes it an awesome hybrid overall, is that it has an immense thwack but it’s not one that’ll put you down for the count. I attempted to smoke it near bed time on a few different occasions and while I was definitely smacked I didn’t end up knocking out until I brought in a heavy indica to finish the job. I love hybrids that have that balance of energy and pressure and .38 Special was exactly that in my experience. While Hollowtips may be a new company on the scene, if this experience is any indication of the overall quality they are capable of producing, they are definitely a formidable force to be reckoned with in the Cannabis space. Excellent work to the Hollowtips team. Can’t wait to see what you put out next!

Vision from Cream of the Crop

Vision from Cream of the Crop via South Coast Safe Access on 10/26/19. THC tested out to 28%. I was gifted 2 grams of Vision, it normally retails for around $18. I was stoked to have this opportunity to review Vision as it’s one of the two newly released sativas from COTC that caught my eye (the other being Bang Bang). These small bright green nugs are heavily frosted over with giant triches that give them a yellow-ish tint and while they have a few dark orange pistils making a rare appearance here and there they are obscured fully by that snowy TV like trich layer.

The nose out of the jar is mostly sweet with a bit a savory element that reminds me of soy sauce. Getting a sense for the smell on a nug break is difficult here because the buds are so small but I pick up on that sweetness coupled with a fresh element of some sort with that soy sauce still lingering in the background. Busting it down by hand, I get that same scent but the fresh element becomes more dominant, although I can’t pick it apart. It’s like a mint and pine combined with the mint taking the lead just slightly. The inhale is smooth and comes off as earthy while the exhale has a taste of that freshness on the way out. The headchange comes on quick but is fairly mild in nature. It brings a touch of energy with it while allowing you to stay present and focused on any given task. It functions well as something to start you day with and won’t leave you with that depleted feeling an hour or so later. That said, if I were on the hunt for some morning smoke and making a choice between this and the Bang Bang, I’d lean toward the Bang Bang because it brought more of that energetic feeling that I look for in a sativa. I was lucky enough to be gifted this Vision but at the normal ticket I’d have to say I’d be hesitant to cop it again just because it’s not exactly what I want out of a wake and bake. There are a lot of formidable sativas out there that the fit the bill as a lesser rate so it’s hard to justify the extra strain on the wallet. Great job to the team at COTC though, while this one might of not been for me it was still clearly top quality, and that’s what counts in the end.

Apple Fritter from KRD

Apple Fritter from KRD via OG Express on 10/16/19. No testing info available. Acquired 7 Grams for $85 total. Apple Fritter is one of those strains I’ve come across only a few times in the past couple years, but every time I have, it’s been absolutely killer and this batch is no exception. These dense nugs are a gorgeous patch work of light and dark green with show stealing deep purple hues and dark amber pistils completely dripping with a generous amount of triches that seem to be stretching across the crevices of the bud creating something akin to interlocked trich forcefield. I really wish I had a macro lens to take a deeper look as it’s very impressive to the naked eye so I can only imagine what it might look like under intense magnification.

The nose out of the bag hits me with a subtle mint and surprisingly not much else. When breaking the bud I detect notes of a minty fruity sweetness but it still remains more muted than I’d expect. On the hand break down it leaves a nice stick on the fingers and I pick up on a sweet lemon mint scent that’s similar to that of a yellow starburst that was in my pocket with a stick of winterfresh gum although more subtle. The inhale is smooth and I catch notes of that sweet fruit with a slightly doughy edge which would seem to speak to its namesake. On the exhale I pick up on a broad earthy mint. The headchange comes on quick and has a smack to it that left me slightly dazed. It has a nice bit of energy that comes with it at first and you’ll be able to focus on a singular task if needed, but if you’re multitasking and going back and forth between a few things, you’re going to have a lot of “what was I just doing?” moments. As time passes you’ll feel it settle in behind the eyes and into the shoulders to the point where you’ll want to let the couchlock take over but not to the point where you’ll feel sleepy. This was a fantastic experience for the ticket and a strain I wouldn’t hesitate making a part of my headstash going forward. I’d say it’s a good smoke for any time you want to get smacked up as hard and fast as possible without having to take a weednap later to recover from it. Excellent work by KRD, if you can grab some, I highly recommend it.

Emperor OG from Cali Kush Farms

Emperor OG from Cali Kush Farms via OG Express on 10/16/19. No testing info available. Purchased 5 grams for $40 on a first time patient deal. Knowing that I’m ever on the hunt new sources of fire, my fellow reviewer @cannicorner (on instagram) recommended OG Express, and I’m really glad he did. The nugs in this batch are huge beautiful light green boulders with dark green lilts that contrast gorgeously with fiery reddish orange pistils that cluster in tight bunches in some spots while stretching out and reaching across the tiny canyons running through the bud in others. All coated in a healthy frosting of triches that feels like sticky crumbs on the fingers once you break the nug down.

The nose out of the bag is a mix of pungent fuel and a delicious citrus backed sweetness. On breaking open the nug I pick up on the same scent but the fuel aspect is ramped up slightly. When breaking it down by hand the smell over all amplifies with that sweet citrus stepping up to the foreground and wrestling with that strong fuel for center stage. The inhale is smooth and I detect that fuel and sweet lemonish taste on both the way in and out. The headchange comes on quick and has a nice thwap up top. I decided to give this a shot as a wake and bake and found myself near instantly spaced out and lost in my thoughts. In the times I was present I experienced a bit of cognitive lock and had a hard time finding the right words or expressions while in conversation. However, as time passed I found myself fully engaged in the game I was playing and not losing focus or having a hard time remembering what I was doing. I was left with a pleasant couch locked feeling without getting heavy eyed and feeling like I needed a nap. That said, when smoking at night, Emporer OG definitely put me straight to bed more than a few times. It’s a fantastic indica, a solid OG that checks all the boxes, and one I’d have no hesitation in visiting again when I’m in the market for a heavier night time smoke. Excellent work to the folks at Cali Kush Farms and OG Express! I’ll definitely be back for more.

Trunk Funk from Cream of the Crop

Trunk Funk from Cream of the Crop via SCSA on 10/16/19. THC tested out to 21.49%. Purchased for $2 on a customer appreciation deal. It’s difficult for me to do reviews on a gram but since it was practically free and a strain I’d never tried before I figured I’d give it a shot. The small buds in this jar were a light green with bunches of reddish brown pistils and a fair coating of triches.

The nose out of the jar was predominantly sweet with a musty peppery funk which really seems to suit it’s name. I tried to get a sense for the scent on breaking the buds but they were too small to get a handle on. When breaking it down by hand I found that pepper scent really took center stage with a doughy sweetness lingering in the background accented by hints of mint. I also found 4 seeds, which isn’t always a bad thing really, but it’s a good amount for a gram. It’s at this point this review is going to take a slight detour from the normal format and go into a little detail about what happened next. When I found the seeds I reached out to a rep for COTC’s parent brand (shoutout to @betterthangood.la) who was extremely apologetic and jumped into action to rectify the situation immediately. Not only did they pull any remaining jars with the same batch number from circulation but they also set it up so I could go and pick up 2 non-promo grams of my choosing from SCSA that same day. Apparently there were problems with the old cultivation team responsible for this batch and they’ve since been replaced and processes revamped. I was frankly blown away by the prompt and customer centric response from COTC on this as making a minor criticism of other brands in the past has just gotten me disregarded and/or blocked. Fantastic work to everyone involved at COTC and SCSA. And now, via this smooth segue, back to the normal review. The inhale was a little harsh on the throat after a few bowls and I didn’t detect any sort of flavor but on the exhale I picked up on a musty sweet aftertaste. The headchange came on quick and was fairly heavy. Even though I smoked this in the morning hours I found myself spacing out pretty hard and eventually ready for a weed nap. It definitely felt like a strain to end the day on. I can’t say I got a good feel for it with it only being a gram but what I can say I got a good feel for was COTC’s customer service, that’s definitely top notch all around, and one that’s earned my trust and future business without a doubt.

Bang Bang from Cream of the Crop

Bang Bang from Cream of the Crop via South Coast Safe Access on 10/16/19. THC tested out to 30.7%. Purchased for $60 plus tax. I love a good sativa so when I saw that Cream of the Crop had one on the shelf that was testing over 30% I had to check it out. As I’ve said before, THC percentages don’t mean everything but they do mean something, so my interest was piqued. The look of this batch is visually reminiscent of some of the best Afgoo I used to get years ago. Extremely light green buds absolutely dripping with massive triches that almost give it this snowy/static look, as if you’re looking at them on an old school CRT TV with a weak signal, coupled burnt orange pistils that are almost entirely obscured by that substantial frost layer.

The nose of out the jar is this beautiful heavy orange scent that lands on the sweeter side coming off like some sort of orange candy that’s made with real organic ingredients. On breaking the nug that orange smells stays dominant but I pick up on a floral element making itself known. Breaking it down by hand those oranges remain but there is a fresh element that steps up to the plate as well hitting my nose somewhere between mint and pine but not exactly landing on either. The inhale is smooth, and you catch that orange experience both in and out, while it ends up leaving a nice natural orange peel like aftertaste on the tongue. The headchange comes on quick and brings a nice level of energy with it while simultaneously putting pressure on the top of your forehead and the sides of your eyes. I will say I had a little trouble staying focused and often times found myself staring off into space only to snap back into reality while exclaiming “oh yeah” and happily resuming whatever I was working on. On the jar it describes the potential effects as “Relaxed, Creative, Euphoria” and I would say that does seem to fall in line with my personal experience here. That relaxed sort of pressure around the head and eyes coupled with the boost of energy and happy go lucky attitude were no doubt present. While no sort of cannabis is going to force feed you creative ideas, I feel like it did put me in positive state of mind where creative could flourish, so I’ll give it to COTC on that one too. Of course, as always, your milage may vary. In the end, Bang Bang is a fantastic sativa and one that quickly became my go to morning smoke. The only hesitation I’d have with picking it up again is the price as there are some quality sativas out there like Crescendo and Quest that come in at about $40 and $45 respectively. That said if the price were the same across the board, it would be an extremely hard choice as Bang Bang really is a phenomenal sativa, it just has some really stiff competition. Amazing work on this one COTC, the only thing I’m bummed about on this batch is that I don’t have any left.
