Passport from The Cure Company

Passport from The Cure Company via City Compassionate Caregivers on 1/6/2020. THC tested out to 27.96%. This sample was gifted to me but it’s on the CCC Menu for $35 plus tax. Passport has been on my radar for a bit now so when I saw it was one of the jars in my sample pack I was stoked. Big shout out to Freshpen23 for making it happen! These mildly dense buds are a patch work of light and dark greens with dark brownish red pistils all frosted over by a formidable layer of triches.

The nose out of the jar is extremely uncommon. I pick up on a muted spiced apple scent with a hint of caramel, but not so much in the way these foods actually smell, but more of a Bath and Bodyworks candle version of it. When busting open a nug the sweeter notes take a back seat to a musty spice that brings a fresh mint like element with it. Breaking it down by hand that fresh element really takes center stage with the spiced apple remaining present but becoming slightly more muted. When dry pulling the j you really get a sense of that sweet spiced fruit up top with a nice minty finish. On the inhale from the joint I get a light pancakes and syrup taste while on the exhale I pick up on a spicy sweet cinnamon. The experience is very similar when using a bong however a big difference I noticed is it really hits you in the sinuses and septum on the exhale. Cross checking the taste on my MV1 from @ghostvapesofficial I get an intense cinnamon spice that’s reminiscent of the Quaker’s Oatmeal of the same name with a very sweet cinnamon aftertaste the makes me feel like I just ate an old school Atomic Fireball. The headchange came on quick and smacked me in a special way. My notes actually say “wide eyed, feel surprised by how high I am”. I was fuzzy headed and getting ASMR like tingles from the top of my head down in to the base of my neck. While I was feeling extremely hazy my thoughts didn’t feel impeded at all, I could focus and follow along and didn’t find myself spacing out once, all while being continuously self aware of how baked I really was. It’s the type of herb that creeps and hits in waves. There were moments where I thought “Oh, I’m not feeling it as much, I should smoke a little more” and I as soon I’d have the bowl packed, I’d stop and take stock of my current state, and realize I really didn’t need it. All and all I’d have to say I’m thoroughly impressed with Passport. It has an incredibly unique and tasty flavor profile with a long lasting high altitude smack to match. With the ticket it goes for at CCC I’d pick this up again in a heartbeat. It’s a fantastic anytime smoke and my only disappointment is that I’m down to my last nug of it. Great job to the folks at The Cure Company! Passport has now been promoted to headstache status in my book.

Candyland from Top Shelf Cultivation

Candyland from Top Shelf Cultivation via Evergreen Santa Ana on 12/21/19. THC tested out to 32.2%. Purchased for $67.20 plus tax. Early last month @manuallyf0cused told me I had to try some Candyland by Top Shelf Cultivation, so when I saw Evergreen had it in stock, I decided to throw down and see what’s what. The colors on these dense bulbous buds vary from nug to nug with a patchwork of light and dark green to rich deep purples, with impacted rusty red pistils, and a glistening layer of triches that fill every available space and crevice.

The nose out of the jar is a deep rich sweetness with a grape like edge and a thick rubber back end. On busting open the nug the sweetness takes center stage, bringing a lemon-ish mint quality with it, while pushing that rubber scent back just a bit more. When breaking it down by hand the rubber and sweet mint aspects seem to come together in a unique way that hits me as a combo of new rain boots and cotton candy. When dry pulling the jay I get a really deep sweetness with a hint of earth. The inhale was smooth from the bong and the J and I picked up on a hint of toasted fruit from both but it wasn’t too specific. The exhale from the J had a candy grape vibe that reminded me of Big League Chew while on the bong I caught a similar flavor but it had a deep rubber aftertaste. Crossing checking the flavor on my MV1 from @ghostvapesofficial I got a very potent flavor that I’d describe as a pleasant version of industrial cleaner with an intense floral aftertaste. The headchange comes on swiftly and brings some good energy with it. At first it’s very clear headed and you’ll have no issue staying active and remaining on task however as the initial impact wears off I’ve noticed this slightly sedative effect that makes me want to take a seat for a few minutes and just relax. I really enjoyed this batch of Candyland, it ticks nearly all the boxes, the only thing I’d wrestle with on picking it up again is the ticket as there are a few choice sativas out there that are bit easier on the wallet. That said, if you find it at a ticket you feel comfortable with I highly recommend it as it’s a solid tasty sativa with some decent stamina that was clearly grown with expertise. Great work to the Top Shelf Cultivation crew, can’t wait to get my hands on those Woah-si-whoas!

Bonzai from Ball Family Farms

Bonzai from Ball Family Farms via Evergreen in Santa Ana on 12/21/19. THC tested out to 19.9%. Currently selling at Connected for $55 out the door. Ball Family Farms put out one of my favorite strains of 2019, Daniel Larusso, so when I heard they had something new coming down the line I knew I had to get my hands on it. The surface of these delicately structured buds is mostly comprised of a pear green with lime accents and the occasional forest green lilt, a smattering of burnt auburn pistils, all frosted under a healthy layer of yellowing triches.

The nose out of the jar hits me like lemon zest with a musty orange back end. Busting open a bud the citrus scents combine into a sweet natural orange that smells unique when compared to the mass amounts of lemon lime candy herb that’s prevalent in todays marketplace. When breaking it down by hand, that sweet natural orange gets even louder, while that lemon makes a come back but is relegated to the background. It’s also so sticky that the small bits of grounds cling to the tips of your fingers and make you fight some to rub them clean. The dry pull on the jay, unsurprisingly, tastes of sugar sweet orange and almost has an orange juice like aftertaste. The inhale was smooth but muted on the flavor end, I didn’t get much of a taste off the joint, but from the bong I picked up on this light citric acid burn on the tongue. On the exhale I get a burnt orange taste from the joint and from the bong it’s more of a a natural musty orange, lacking that sweetness from the dry pull, but having a powerful aftertaste that lingers for a minute or two after smoking. Cross checking the flavor on my MV1 from @ghostvapesofficial I catch a really mild orange on the inhale, and a very zesty orange aftertaste that’s similar to biting into an orange without peeling it, but not quite as intense or traumatic. The headchange comes on quick and brings a bit of energy with it but also has a slap that can leave you spacey if you aren’t intensely focused. It lacks that racy edge I look for in an early morning sativa but functions nicely as a mid to late day smoke as long as you don’t mind losing track of what you’re doing on occasion. The ticket is just a tad higher than a lot of really solid sativas out there so that would be my only point of hesitation when considering picking this up again. Excellent work Ball Family Farms, you guys are killing it and I can’t wait to see what you put out next!

Pound Cake from High Season

Pound Cake from High Season via Secret Sesh on 12/07/19. THC tested out to 27.63%. Purchased for $35 out the door. One of the last things I ended up grabbing at Secret Sesh, on recommendation from my buddy Dabberchan, was this Pound Cake on offer from High Season. The coloring on these dense buds is mostly a light lime green with rashes of deep rich purple and a thick blockade of triches that almost looks unreal. It’s as if a new species of spider capable of spinning trich webs came along and wrapped this bud up for safe keeping.

The nose out of the jar is extremely musty with a slightly acrid quality and reminds me of clothes that’ve been put in old wooden trunk and are just getting air for the first time years. When busting open a nug the mustiness lightens up a little bit and a fresh floral element makes presence known. When breaking the nug down by hand that fresh floral aspect steps to the foreground and the mustiness shifts to a plain cereal smell that fills out the backend. When dry pulling the joint I get a sugar sweetness up top followed by a fresh floral finish. The inhale was mostly smooth but started to get harsh toward the end of the joint. While smoking it, I picked up on an unripe banana taste on the way in with just a hint of toasted sweetness where as when smoking the bong it was more of a muted banana bread flavor. The exhale didn’t have too rich of a taste coming off either manner of smoking, it was a vague earthiness at best, with just a hint of dough on the bong side. When crossing checking the flavor on my MV1 from @ghostvapesofficial it hit with an extremely strong sweet floral taste which was like an amped up version of the dry pull on the J. The headchange comes on quick and with a slap that makes you want to take a seat. I feel like this is the sort of weed those anti drug commercials from the 90’s were trying to warn us about. The kind that will melt you into a couch and leave you paralyzed for life. Starting from the middle of your forehead, you feel the effect travel through your eyes and into your lower back, firmly locking you to your seat. It doesn’t interfere with cognition but your motivation level to do anything outside of sitting there and staring at the TV while spacing out will be at absolute zero. On the jar it says that this is “Great for an intense body high that helps put you in the mood. Use post “workout” to assist with muscle recovery”. I am not sure why they put the word workout in quotes but maybe they mean it as a double entendre. In any case, I don’t see how using this herb in that way would hurt exactly, but I don’t see how Pound Cake would be more beneficial than other indicas in that sense. I’d save this one for later in the evening as it is indeed a solid indica at a great ticket that has an intense thwap that will make any worries you have seem like they’re million miles away prior to putting you to bed. Great job on this one High Season, you’re definitely on my radar now.

Triangle Mints from The Cannabis Brothers

Triangle Mints from The Cannabis Brothers via Secret Sesh on 12/07/19. THC tested out to 27.54%. Purchased for $40 after tax. I’ve been following Payasogrow for a while now on Instagram, admiring their work from a distance, so when I saw The Cannabis Brothers had a booth at Secret Sesh I knew I had to get my hands on at least one of their offerings. These semi dense nugs are a patch work of greens that range from light lime all the way to deep forest with what I believe are dark purple lilts and brownish orange pistils. To be honest the colors are hard to make out under the incredibly thick layer of brilliantly shining triches that are plastered over every centimeter of the bud from the surface to its core.

The nose out of the jar is a musty pepper coupled with rubber and a slightly minty back end. On busting open a nug the mint seems to amp up and brings a bit of pine with it that pushes that rubber back slightly giving the scent this overall industrial cleaner sort of vibe. This batch is very resistant to being ground by hand. It’s very sticky and sort of rolls up on itself creating pebbles instead of dusting out. Once ground the mint widens out and a sugar sweetness emerges while the rubber gets further relegated to the background but still remains present. When dry pulling a joint I pick up on mint with a sugary aftertaste. The inhale is smooth as expected and I pick up on a slight menthol tang. On the exhale from the joint I get mint and pine with a savory edge, however, when using my bong it was a much stronger sugar mint with a hard pepper slap. It’s one of those exhales that hits you right in the sinuses and septum and makes you feel like you just sneezed. Cross checking the flavor on my MV1 from @ghostvapesofficial that sweet menthol taste was really taken to a new level where it had a brow raising Winterfresh gum like effect and I actually got a “cool” feeling from the exhale. The headchange absolutely smacks near immediately with an intensity that increases over time. It hit me in the sinuses and traveled into my neck and upper back with an ASMR type tingle. I found myself spacing out constantly, lost in my own thoughts, only to snap suddenly back to reality and needing a minute to get my bearings straight. I’d say this is a powerful indica leaning hybrid with formidable stamina that’s best saved for the evening when you’re looking get hella zonked. It will make you take a seat on the couch and you’ll be staring at the TV for 20 minutes before you realize you’ve just been zoning out on the Netflix menu and haven’t selected anything to watch. Fantastic work by The Cannabis Brothers! I will definitely keep an eye out for more of their product as it’s apparent they are cultivators of the highest echelon.

Zkittlez Cake #10 from The Jungle Boys

Zkittlez Cake #10 from The Jungle Boys via Los Angeles Farmers on 12/17/19. THC tested out to 23.67%. Purchased for $200 an ounce after tax. I haven’t been to Los Angeles Farmers since the prop 215 days, but when my fellow reviewer @skinupthen clued me in to a killer deal on this Zkittlez Cake pheno, I made it a priority to swing by on my way through the downtown area and I’m glad I did. These moderately dense buds are comprised mostly of lime green with patches of dark forest green dipping into subtle yet rich purples at times with an abundance of amber pistils and a hefty coating of large yellowing triches.

The nose out of the bag is a muted lemon lime with a musty wet grass in the background. When busting open a bud the sweet lemon lime scent amps up with the mustiness remaining in the background with an added pizza dough like quality. The buds break down by hand really well, it’s almost like they want to be rolled up in a j so they give little resistance, but they do leave a healthy trich grime on your finger tips. The grounds hit my nose as a sweet lime with a slightly nutty dough and just a hint of vanilla that’s very reminiscent of a Peruvian alfajor cookie before it gets the dulce de leche and powered sugar treatment. I realize that description may only make sense to a limited audience so imagine the taste of a very soft and crumbly butter cookie with a lime zest edge and it’s a good approximation. When dry pulling a j I get a very strong fruity candy sweetness that hits my tongue similar to a pink starburst. The inhale is smooth and I pick up on a touch of sweet citrus along with notes of pancakes and syrup, while on the exhale I get a really strong citrus that leaves a Sprite like aftertaste in my mouth. Crosschecking the flavor on my @ghostvapesofficial MV1 I get a strong tangy lime taste on both the inhale and exhale along with a hint of toasted sugar. The headchange is noticeable immediately as you feel the weight of the world instantly vanish. I don’t want to overhype it but I feel like Zkittlez Cake #10 is essentially a weighted blanket for your brain. There’s a warmth that wraps itself around the front of your head and radiates into the eyes and tops of the cheeks all the way down to the base of the neck. You’ll find yourself happily spacing off into your own thoughts, laughing at your own dumb jokes, and really digging that new song you just found out about and can’t stop playing on repeat. It’s the type of herb that just seems to turn up the brightness on life a little bit in general. While it’s a little heavy for a wake and bake in my opinion I’d say it’s a fantastic smoke at any time of day. The current ticket makes it an incredible deal, one that has me thinking about going to back to LA Farmers at least once a day for fear they’ll run out, as it is the best deal in the recreational market that I’ve come across yet. Excellent work to the entire Jungle Boys team! I’m thoroughly impressed and feel dumb for sleeping on you guys for so long in the prop 64 era despite your stores only being an hour away. I’ll definitely be back soon.

Orange Julius from Maven

Orange Julius from Maven via Secret Sesh on 12/07/19. THC tested out to 26.496%. Purchased for $40 out the door. During my shopping spree at Secret Sesh I stopped by the Maven booth to see what they had on offer and this Orange Julius really stood out to me. These fluffy buds are comprised of a light green surface with dark green lilts, burnt orange pistils and a frosting of triches so thick they look like a shimmering force field around the nug, which makes it difficult to get a handle on the true overall coloring.

The nose out of the jar is, not surprisingly, straight orange with just a slight hint of mint in the background. On busting open a nug the orange smell sugars up a little and hits a lot like fresh squeezed orange juice. When broken down by hand the oranges amp up even further and make the area smell like you just peeled an orange, it’s impressively strong, and you’ll also notice a good amount of triches left on your finger tips. I did find 2 seeds in one particular nug in my batch. A couple seeds in this amount isn’t crazy, and could frankly be a come up for the right person, so I won’t knock it for that but for sake of veracity I thought I’d mention it. When dry pulling on the J I get the taste of fresh oranges and a little bit of mint but mostly a fresh orange zest like zing. The inhale is smooth and I pick up on a very light sweet citrus and on the exhale I get a strong orange with a musty earthy backend. Cross checking the flavor on my MV1 from @ghostvapesofficial I get a very mild orange on the inhale but an extremely strong orange zest like zing similar to the dry pull of the j multiplied by 10. The headchange does come on fast but is fairly mild mannered. I like my sativas to have a racy near paranoid edge and that’s something that’s just not present in this batch of Orange Julius. It’s not exactly sedative but there is this strong hazy quality that sort of makes me feel “meh” instead of feeling energized. Instead of a get up and go sativa I’d describe this more as a get up and chill sativa. You can focus if you need to and you won’t exactly be sleepy but you don’t feel like doing much either. This would be good for a wake and bake on a lazy Sunday morning or maybe an afternoon at the movies but I’d avoid it if you have a list of chores you need to knock out. This was a beautiful looking, awesome smelling batch, and (despite those two seeds) in those two categories it really knocked out of the park. However in terms of effect, it left something to be desired, so when on the hunt for a rush inducing sativa I’d probably leave this one on the shelf.

Golden State Banana from Elyon

Golden State Banana from Elyon via Secret Sesh on 12/07/19. THC tested out to 23.29%. Was being sold at Secret Sesh for $30 out the door. Golden State Banana is starting to pop up in a lot of different places as of late, so when I saw this new collab at the Elyon booth my interest was admittedly piqued, and I was stoked there ended up being some in my gift bag. These fluffy buds are mostly a light lime with fern green accents and occasional reddish brown pistils that are near fully obscured by a healthy coating of large yellowing triches.

The nose out of the jar is a musty muted fruit with this really light acrid quality in the background. On the break the musty muted fruit does get louder but remains mostly unchanged, although that acrid battery acid like smell seems to intensity just a bit. When breaking it down by hand it crumbles near instantly leaving a dusting of those huge triches on your finger tips. The fruity sweetness of the bud shifts into more of a sugar sweet dough when ground that reminded me of the topping caked on a concha (Mexican sweet bread) but with a musty and slightly floral backend. When pulling on the J prior to lighting it I got a surprisingly sweet flavor that reminded me of those old school strawberry hard candies elderly folks always seem to have on hand. The inhale is smooth and I pick up on a bit of a toasted sugar taste but it’s very faint. On the exhale I get a faint sweet fruit rind sort of taste. Cross checking the flavor on the MV1 from @ghostvapesofficial I got more of a fresh element coupled with light fruity sweetness and a hint of cinnamon. Truth be told, although faint, it reminded me of the aftertaste a fried plantain at a Brazilian BBQ will leave your mouth. The headchange comes on fast and has a decent smack. It gives you those hazy eyes almost immediately and that spreads to the forehead and down into the back of the neck. I’d definitely save this one for the afternoon and evening as it really complements winding down from your day. While it’s enjoyable in its own rite, when juxtaposed to my experience with Synergy’s Golden State Banana, it pales in comparison. The effect was good but just not as powerful and memorable as its Synergy counterpart. That said, this is also available at nearly half the ticket, and when stacked up again the competition in that range, it stands out as a solid bargain. If the ticket is of no concern, I’d say you should try to go with the Synergy offering if possible, however if you’re looking for a good smoke in the lower to mid tier range then this would be right up your alley.

Trifi Cookies from Elyon

Trifi Cookies from Elyon via Secret Sesh on 12/07/19. THC tested out to 23.84%. Sold for $25 total at Secret Sesh. When I stopped by the Elyon booth, these Trifi Cookies really got my attention with the way they caught the sunlight, so I was stoked to come home with some. These dense buds are mostly a bright lime green with deep purple lilts and dark rusty red pistils with a thick eye popping layer of triches that glimmer even in the dimmest of light.

The nose out of the jar is a combo of nutmeg and cinnamon with dough and a bit of must in the background. It smells a bit like a day old apple fritter. Busting open the nug I get more of a cinnamon breakfast cereal smell that reminds me of Apple Jacks. Breaking it down by hand you notice how sticky and dense the bud is, I actually had to resort to ripping it up as opposed to grinding it between my fingers as it offered just a bit too much resistance. The grounds give off a combo of mint and musty dough with that spice being pushed to the background along with what smells like a slight touch of artificial watermelon. On the dry pull of the jay I get a sweet natural flavor that reminded me of sucking on the bottom of a purple honeysuckle flower when I was a kid. I didn’t detect much flavor on the inhale but it was smooth. On the exhale I picked up on a really pleasant floral and perfume like aftertaste. Cross checking the flavor on the @ghostvapesofficial MV1 I noticed the inhale had a very muted earthy and spicy inhale while the exhale remained similar yet more pronounced. The headchange comes on quick and is middle of the road but leans slightly heavy. A haze sets in behind the eyes, in the neck, and on top of the head that makes it really pleasant to just throw your head back and close your eyes while sitting on the couch. Physical heaviness aside, while I feel that slap I remain clear headed, able to focus, and my ability to think remains intact. This would be a solid herb to have on deck for afternoon and evening use when you’re looking to chill and watch some TV or finish up some work on the computer. I could see myself picking it up again depending on the rate, but definitely at the bargain ticket Elyon had for at Secret Sesh. Excellent work on this one Elyon!

Pink Picasso from Wonderbrett

Pink Picasso from Wonderbrett via Secret Sesh on 12/07/19. THC tested out to 25.57%. Purchased 14 grams for $100. When I started my Secret Sesh shopping spree my first stop was the Wonderbrett booth and they really made it challenging to hold on to my money as the ticket they were offering was nearly unheard of in the recreational market for this level of quality. While the bag is labeled “smalls” the nugs looked pretty much exactly the same size as what you’d come across in any given top shelf jar at any given shop. These semi dense buds have an intense camouflage pattern of light and dark greens coupled with rich deep purples and sporadic bunches of burnt orange pistils all iced over with a healthy layer of yellowing triches.

The nose out of the jar has elements of a sweet fruit with a minty eucalyptus like zing that smells like a combo of skittles and mentos smashed together. On busting open a nug the sweet fruit smell gets a bit more pronounced but remains essentially the same. When breaking the nug down by hand that eucalyptus zing shifts into a strong mint accompanied with a sugar sweetness but strangely I don’t pick up on any fruit scent at all anymore. When taking a dry pull on the j I pick up on a breakfast cereal like sweetness at first that reminds me Golden Crisp followed by a near cloyingly sweet candy-like fruitiness. The inhale is smooth and I detect a sugar syrup like sweetness while on the exhale I get mint with a sweet and slightly fruity backend. I cross checked the flavor on the MV1 gifted to me by @ghostvapesofficial and the mint really shined through pushing that sugary fruity sweetness to the background. The headchange has a nice smack and is fairly middle of the road but has a weight to it that can leave you feeling a little sedated. At first I thought I’d lean on this as a wake and bake strain because of the fruity smell it put out but I found myself succumbing to the pressure an hour or so after smoking and wanting to just chill on the couch and take a nap. I’d say this is a strain better suited to a chill evening at home. It doesn’t have such a thwack that it debilitates you immediately but given time it will put you to bed if you’re tired and ready to end your night. For the ticket I copped this at I’d do it again in a heartbeat, however at the rate you typically might find this for in a shop, I might be a little hesitant depending on what else is available. That said, great job to the team at Wonderbrett on this one, hopefully discounted smalls will be something you can make available to the masses one day as they are a definite hit with me!
