Mike and Larry #8 (sample) from Indoor Organic Gardens

Mike and Larry #8 (sample) from Indoor Organic Gardens received on 7/18/19. This is the only sample I received from IOG that’s not a cross with GMO (It’s Gelato 45 x Larry OG F8) so I was unsure what to expect, but once I popped the jar and put eyes on this beauty, I knew it was another banger. These are big beefy nugs with a blizzard of triches so thick that it’s hard to determine the surface colors of the of the plant itself. Through the frost I can make out a budscape of fluctuating colors that rapidly transition from light to dark green with rusty orange hairs making rare appearances on top of the calyx but staying mostly confined to the crevices of the nug.

Out of the jar you get this really nice musty spice scent that has hints of floral sweetness to it. On the finger grind the spiciness amps up a bit and comes off with a light ginger like zing while maintaining that sweetness in the background. The inhale is smooth as I no doubt expected and the exhale has an interesting muted taste. I pick up on floral and savory, and while pleasant, it’s really hard to pin down. The effect has a nice smack up front and settles in right on the top of your forehead, it then slowly sinks in down behind the eyes. I feel focused and alert enough to handle any given task, but have a bit of that “forgot what I was just doing before I smoked” feeling, which is perfect if you need a recover from a rough day or even morning. I found myself just wanting to kick back and watch a movie and forget about any responsibilities I may have. It seemed to zoom me out in a philosophical way where I started to ask myself “Do these things I’m stressed about really matter?” which is definitely a point of view everybody needs to visit on occasion. Mike and Larry #8 takes you to a place where you can find your calm and reset, where you can evaluate what matters from a 10,000 foot level and touch on a little bit of that nirvana like feeling without leaving the earth. This is not a strain that should be taken lightly, if you have full day of tasks a head of you, wake and baking on Mike and Larry may not result in you finishing those tasks. If you’re having a hard time with something in your life though Mike and Larry #8 is the type of herb that can give you an elevated perspective and help you find the path through it. At the end of the day it’ll definitely put you to bed too as it hits extremely hard and will make your head heavy. This sample run from IOG has been a fantastic experience and is honestly amongst some of the best herb I’ve smoked in my entire life. Everything so far I’ve reviewed from them has been of the highest caliber and I have no doubt if you find their product in the wild you will not be disappointed. Fantastic job once again IOG. If I was the kind of dude to wear hats, mine would definitely be off to you!

Bumpy from The Backpack Boyz

Bumpy from The Backpack Boyz via Cana Farms on 7/17/19. THC tested out to 29.88%. Purchased for $60 plus tax minus 20% early bird special. I’d seen these old school gangster strains starting to pop up on instagram fairly frequently so when I spotted Bumpy at Cana Farms I decided to give it a spin. These nugs are extremely dense. The surface color runs from deep green to dark purple with bunches of bright orange hairs popping up at random and a fair coating of triches.

Out the bag the nose hits spicy over all with hints of mint. On the finger grind I pick up on a very piney mint scent mixed with spice, overall, it has a really “refreshing” vibe. Grinding it even further revealed a vanilla tinted sweetness in the mix. It does not finger grind all that well, and it feels like it leaves a waxy coating on your fingers, but not in that finger hashy resin kind of way I’m used to from quality herb. The inhale is just a bit harsh and on the exhale I pick up on notes of spice and gas. It tastes similar to some really good OGs I’ve had in the past. The headchange is fairly mild mannered and comes off as an average hybrid. The first time I smoked it was after a long day and it really hit me like a ton of bricks. I just knocked right out. Subsequently that really hasn’t been my experience, and while I don’t mind an even keel hybrid high, I expect a lot more from the headchange when it comes to herb at this ticket and with these stats. It just goes to show that THC percentages really are not everything. While it’s not bad herb by any means and does have a very unique terp profile, at $60 plus tax, I wouldn’t be repeat buyer in this case. Sorry Backpack Boyz, this one is a miss for me.

Guava from Loudpack

Guava from Loudpack via Connected Santa Ana on 7/9/19. THC tested out to 17%. Purchased for $35 after tax. The nose in the jar is a similarly fruity sweetness to that of the Connected Guava, it has an old school strawberry fruit roll up scent to it, a real earthy sort of sweet. When you bust it open, you get a really nice fruity floral scent but it’s much more of a natural smelling fruit this time around, lacking that artificial candy zing. The nugs have a good looking structure to them, they look like they had space to grow, having a much less condensed look than that of Connected’s Guava.

There’s also a generous coating of triches, however, on the finger grind it doesn’t really give you any of that “sticky” finger hash feeling. The inhale is smooth, even after smoking a few bowls in a row I didn’t get even a hint of scratchy throat, and the taste of that earthy sweetness comes back again on the exhale. The headchange is smooth and doesn’t rock you too hard, you can concentrate and get things done, but it will mellow you out well if you’re feeling a little hype from your morning coffee. I have to say I enjoyed this version of Guava over that of Connected. The THC might be lower, and the ticket might be slightly higher, but it’s just over all a more pleasurable experience. From the look and smell, to the pull, to the headchange I have to declare Loudpack’s Guava the winner in this particular Guava-off. Excellent work to the folks at Loudpack!

Guava from Connected California

Guava from Connected California via Connected Santa Ana on 7/9/19. THC tested out to 21.66% Total. Purchased for $28 plus tax. The smell out of the bag is fruity and sweet which is no surprise given the name Guava. The nugs themselves are dark green little boulder looking shrubs that are fairly dense but still have the slightest give to the squeeze. There are dark orange hairs that seem nearly vacuum sealed to the surface with the way they cling to it.

On the finger grind you get a really sweet fruity candy scent, it has this artificial sweetness zing to it that kind of reminds me of old school Fruit Stripe gum or grape Big League Chew. You also get a little bit of that sticky finger hashy feeling on the touch. The inhale is slightly harsh and there’s not a lot of taste on the exhale except for a hint of fruity mustiness. The headchange comes on in a mild way and doesn’t hit too hard. This is nice mellow hybrid that will allow you to focus if need be, but is much better suited to an afternoon kicking back and watching movies. It doesn’t exactly lock you down, but it hits you behind the eyes in that way where you really don’t feel motivated to do much, except maybe take a nap eventually. It’s a fine hybrid at a fair ticket on the rec market but it’s nothing to really write home about.

Golden State Banana from Synergy Cannabis Co

Golden State Banana from Synergy Cannabis via Cana Farms on 7/17/19. THC tested out to 27.95%. Purchased for $50 plus tax minus 20% early bird discount. I’d had seen this strain making its way around instagram as of late so I decided to give it a shot. The buds have a sort of thick trident look to them. Light green spikey nugs with occasional orange brown pistils absolutely flooded with large salt-like triches clinging to the surface at any point they can find.

On opening the jar there is this musty earthy nose with a hint of muted fruit in the background. After finger grinding it, there’s this beautiful sweet scent that’s unlocked, its hard to pin down but I’d day it smells something similar to a pack of old school Lifesavers. It has this sort of zing to it that makes my mouthwater just a bit. The inhale is smooth and I noticed a musty taste on the exhale with hints of vanilla sweetness. As for the headchange, this herb has a surprising smack that will leave your bell rung after the first bowl if you’re not prepared. The first time I smoked it, I was a friends new place and looked down to pack what I felt like must have been my 3rd or 4th bowl, only to realize I didn’t know where to ash it because I had just finished the very first one. In my stoney state I was stunned by this realization and had the simple of thought of “Wow, this shit is REALLY good.” In the subsequent bowls since I haven’t been as thwacked as I now know what to expect but that doesn’t take away from the fact that Golden State Banana absolutely thumps with authority and will leave you dazed. If you’re looking for a solid indica that doesn’t couchlock you but does pack a wallop then you’ll definitely be happy with GSB. This was a great introduction to the Synergy Cannabis line up and I’m extremely interested to try out some of their other offerings if they are of similar caliber to what I’ve experienced here. Definitely would pick it up again without hesitation.

Lemon Citrine from Wonderbrett

Lemon Citrine from Wonderbrett via Caña Farms on 7/17/19. THC tested out to 22.07%. Purchased for $55 plus tax minus 20% for the early bird special. The last time I came across WonderBrett it was in the pre-prop 64 days when most nug was still sold out of mason jars and pre-packaged 8ths were a rarity. The packaging on their Tangieland was awesome, and looking at the current recreational marketplace, it was a brilliant move that was ahead of its time. That tradition continues today with their current offering, a nice looking watch style box, a sleek black opaque jar within. The look of this particular batch of Lemon Citrine is itself fairly ho-hum in comparison to it’s illustrious packaging. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a very nice looking herb, it just doesn’t give me that visceral gut reaction when I see it like lot of top shelf does these days. The nugs are a nice light green with the occasional blotch of dark and light orange hairs manifesting themselves in patches sporadically across the well triched out surface.

They are also more dense than they appear, giving only slightly to the squeeze, which is surprising for a sativa. The nose is very Jack like, but it has a slight citrus twist, like a citrusy potpourri. It doesn’t finger grind well, but on the attempt, it really unmutes the lemon / citrus smell and you get a good sense as to it’s namesake. The inhale is smooth and you do catch a slight lemon taste on the exhale. The headchange comes on fast and is equally racy which is exactly what I hope for in my sativas. It’s got a slightly spacey edge to it, so while it doesn’t derail focus if you’re concentrating on something, it’ll make your mind wander if you allow for it. While this particular patch of Lemon Citrine may not be the most beautiful herb I’ve ever seen, it’s a great sativa, and one I wouldn’t mind wake and baking on regularly. As for the price, I’d have a hard time paying $55 a pop when there’s a so many awesome sativas out there in the $40 range but if I could find it for around $45 out the door I’d be a buyer all day.

Watermelon from Maven

Watermelon from Maven via People’s OC on 7/12/19. THC tested out to 22.577%. Normally $50 plus tax but I split an ounce with a buddy and after the first time discount it ended up being $40 after tax per 8th. I’ve heard of Maven for a while now and they are always spoken about in positive regard, and after checking out this Watermelon, I can definitely understand why. The look does grab ones attention when hunting in a shop. Large healthy light green nugs with spurts of orange hairs dotting the surface under a nice frosting of triches. Its got that hazy glowy sheen to it that says this herb smacks.

The scent in the jar is slightly muted, I’m picking up on spice and sweetness, but you have to stick your nose all the way in the jar for it. On the finger grind, that fruitiness really shoots to the forefront and takes center stage. The info card that came in the box says Pinene is the top terp in this batch but, if that’s supposed to smell like pine, I don’t pick up on any of it. The inhale is ok but will leave your throat a little scratchy after a j. No real noticeable taste on the exhale. The headchange doesn’t exactly smack so much as it does gently push you back. After smoking a full j I felt functional and relaxed, not really impeded in any sort of way but not motivated to do much either. Definitely a nice way to start the end of the day if you don’t want to get as wrecked as possible as fast as possible right when you get home from work. You can smoke a big bowl or two and enjoy a movie and by the time it’s over and you smoke that third bowl it will gently see you off to sleep. Luckily I was able to get this as a discounted ticket of $40 out the door, and at that rate I’d have no problem repeating this experience, but at the full rate of $50 plus tax, I’d think twice. This is a great looking herb with a fairly decent indica effect, it won’t have me running back for more, but it does make me curious as to Maven’s other offerings.

Modified Punch #13 (sample) from Indoor Organic Gardens

Modified Punch #13 (sample) from Indoor Organic Gardens received on 7/18/19. When I first saw on this strain it was a definite eye popper. On sight, it’s the type of herb that makes you say “Oooooh dayum” out loud. On finding out it’s a cross with Purple Punch it makes total sense. We all know Purple Punch is notorious for its bag appeal, it tends to be all bark and no bite except on rare occasions, so I was unsure of what to expect here. Modified Punch is a cross between the infamous Purple Punch and GMO and definitely showcases the gorgeous trich blasted look of its purple parent. At first glance, I thought a majority of the bud was a deep rich violet, but it’s really more of a light green with various bursts of attention grabbing dark purple.

To be honest, it’s extremely hard to gauge the color properly because it’s so heavily frosted you can’t make out the true color of the bud underneath the triches. I’m fortunate enough to have some GMO on hand right now which makes it a little easier to see the GMO characteristics that are prevalent in this particular batch. The coloring is one aspect, the second is in the nose. I pick up on that solid GMO funk, that spicy savoriness, but it’s accompanied by a sweet berry scent as well. It’s very reminiscent of Captain Crunch Crunch Berries, at least what I can recall from memory as it’s been years since I’ve had it, but it’s what immediately comes to mind from the scent on breaking up the bud. On the finger grind, while you don’t notice any stickiness, you will notice that it leaves a heavy dusting of diamonds on your fingertips. This is one batch I actually feel bad ripping a part, I tend to leave the bud as whole as possible while stuffing it in to my bowl, just to leave those gorgeous triches intact for burning. The inhale is smooth and the exhale leaves a spicy taste with a hint of sweetness on the tongue. The headchange is extremely slow and heavy and sits right behind the eyes. It creeps at dubious pace in the sense that you’re lulled into thinking you could smoke a second bowl, but just as you’re about to spark it up you realize “damn, I’m pretty sunk right now”. Once it settles in you really feel it in your body, there’s this slight level of dissociation, you feel very floaty. While a lot of strong herb these days smacks, Modified Punch smashes like a hydraulic press, slowly upping the pressure until you’re wholly obliterated. I would suggest saving this one to end a hard day where you really need to unwind. You’ll easily get lost in your phone or TV and your troubles will be a million miles behind you. Another incredible job by the IOG team!

Daniel Larusso from Ball Family Farms

Daniel Larusso from Ball Family Farms via Connected Santa Ana on 7/9/19. THC tested out to 28.42%. Purchased for $65 after tax. Being a child of the 80’s I loved the Karate Kid, so when I saw Ball Family Farms named their strain Daniel Larusso, I knew I was going to have go get my hands on some. Despite the occasional tiny nanner, this herb is really fantastic looking. Rich purple hues comprise the surface as an abundance deep auburn pistils, almost looking like fingers purposely grasping the bud, claw their way across the budscape.

The nose comes off as minty and spicy, more specifically, I feel like I pick up on notes of pepper. The headchange is fantastic. It comes on fast and quick, it’s like a Crain Kick to the brain, and it leaves you fairly stunned at first. After the initial hit, it steadies out into an even hybrid experience, and doesn’t leave you too locked up nor spacey. It’s a great afternoon smoke if you’re headed out to lunch, or the movies with friends, or even out for a hike. It’s perfect for those occasions where you’re short on time and need to get ripped quick before heading out because it thwacks in a certain way that’s just inherently satisfying. This was a outstanding first experience with Ball Family Farms and I’m extremely interested to see what they put out next.

M.A.C. One from Korova

M.A.C. One from Korova via The Spot in Santa Ana on 7/06/19. THC tested out to 21.45%. Purchased for $50 plus tax. I was hella excited to get my hands on this as it seems to be a very rare drop by the Korova Team. I was really impressed with the size of the nugs in the particular batch, especially considering once they were broken down, there was relatively little lumber. The buds themselves are a beautiful mix of light and dark green with bands of purple hues all blanketed in those signature MAC triches.

The nose carries a musty spicy sweetness, although the sweetness is more muted than I’ve come across in other MACs, it still very much has that unique hard to pin down scent. The in and exhale are extremely smooth and I pick up on a little bit of sweetness on the way out. The headchange comes on quick and definitely leaves you slightly spacey but this batch is a bit less racy than other MACs I’ve had in the past. Korova rates it at nearly full sativa for effect, but I’d actually put it more toward the middle, knocking right a box or two. It doesn’t impede your ability to focus, but there’s not a whole lot of energy or motivation, it would be fairly easy and enjoyable to just sit on the couch and veg out with a movie. That said, it’s not exactly a wake and bake strain but it is a good all day any time strain. If you have things to do it won’t hold you up and you’ll feel great doing it. If you don’t have anything to do, you’ll feel great doing that too, it’s a fantastic “toke and talk” kind of herb that would be well shared amongst a group of friends catching up. Another exemplary strain done right by the folks at Korova, awesome job!
